Beginner basics

Exchange vs self-custody wallet

An exchange account generally relies on platform custody. A self-custody wallet gives you control through signing credentials. They are not the same account, and a beginner does not need both immediately. Start with the task you want to perform and who can recover access.

Ask who controls the assets

An exchange password grants access to a platform account; wallet signing credentials authorize on-chain actions. An application offering both an exchange and a Web3 wallet does not automatically combine their balances. Binance explicitly distinguishes its custodial exchange accounts from its Web3 wallet.

Ask who can restore access after a lost password and whether you can independently authorize transactions if a provider disappears. These questions are more useful than judging the product by its name or visual design.

Do you need both immediately?

Reading prices and learning concepts does not require funding an account. Before using an exchange, check your residency eligibility, verification requirements and risks. Learn a wallet when you have a clear reason, such as supported on-chain receiving or application interaction.

Avoid opening multiple wallets and products just for introductory rewards. More accounts create more recovery methods and permissions to manage. Learn one complete workflow before adding another.

Addresses are not recovery secrets

An address identifies an account; signing credentials authorize actions. Many wallets use a recovery phrase, while others use different recovery designs. Read the instructions for your actual wallet rather than assuming all wallets work alike.

A public address is not a password, but sharing it may expose transaction relationships. Never enter recovery material into an unsolicited 'wallet verification' page or share it with a chat contact.

Moving assets is not switching a tab

Sending from an exchange to an external wallet generally requires a withdrawal. Sending back requires a deposit. Verify asset, network, address, required memo, minimum and fee. Similar-looking addresses do not establish network compatibility.

Moving between an exchange's funding and trading balances is a different action: an internal ledger transfer. Identify whether the interface says transfer, deposit or withdrawal before confirming.

Make a decision checklist

Self-custody introduces backup, malicious-approval and signing risks; custody introduces platform and account-access risks. Neither removes every risk.

Write down your intended task, network, recovery method and expected costs. If you cannot explain these, postpone sending real funds. This guide explains the operational distinction, not investment suitability.

Frequently asked questions

Does uninstalling a wallet erase the assets?

Usually it does not erase blockchain records, but it can remove local access material. Confirm recovery before uninstalling, clearing data or resetting a device.

Can wallet support restore my recovery phrase?

A provider generally cannot reconstruct a lost secret for a phrase-based self-custody wallet. Other recovery designs vary. Never disclose secrets to someone claiming to help.

Why are exchange and wallet balances different?

They may represent separate accounts or networks. Check account, address, network and transaction history before assuming a loss or sending another transfer.
