TRC20 vs ERC20 Address: Are They the Same for USDT?

TRC20 and ERC20 are different token standards on different blockchains. Even when an address looks compatible, you must select the exact network supported by the receiving wallet or exchange.

TRC20 and ERC20 are different networks

TRC20 USDT is issued on the Tron network, while ERC20 USDT is issued on Ethereum. They can represent the same stablecoin brand, but transaction fees, block explorers, network conditions and receiving support are different.

Ethereum-style addresses commonly begin with 0x, while Tron addresses commonly begin with T. This visual clue can help, but it should never replace checking the network label shown by the receiving platform.

How to choose the correct USDT network

  1. Open the deposit or receive screen on the destination platform first.
  2. Select USDT and review the networks that the destination explicitly supports.
  3. Choose that exact network on the sending platform.
  4. Copy the newly displayed address and check whether a memo or tag is required.
  5. Compare the first and last characters after pasting the address.
  6. Send a small test amount and wait for credit before sending a larger amount.

What happens if the wrong network is used?

The transfer may arrive at an address controlled by the same wallet but remain invisible until the correct network is added. For custodial exchanges, recovery depends on whether the platform controls the address and supports a recovery procedure. Recovery is not guaranteed and may involve a fee.

Do not import a private key into an unknown recovery website. If funds were sent to an exchange, contact the exchange through its official app or help center and provide the transaction hash.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send TRC20 USDT to an ERC20 deposit address?

Do not do so unless the receiving platform explicitly confirms support for that exact network and address. The token name alone is not enough; the selected network must match on both sides.

Why are TRC20 and ERC20 fees different?

They use different blockchains and fee mechanisms. Fees also change with network demand and platform withdrawal policies, so check the live fee shown before confirming.

Is BEP20 the same as ERC20?

No. BNB Smart Chain uses an Ethereum-compatible address format, but it is a separate network. A matching 0x format does not make the networks interchangeable.
